Islington Area Guide

Primarily being a residential area, Islington offers traditional architecture and a busy high street for its residents and visitors and provides the name of the modern borough, London Borough of Islington.

Islington is well known for being the water source where a river was constructed as a waterway by Sir High Myddelton, who’s statue stands between Upper Street and Essex Road and the walk way of the new river path remains.

Islington received a surge of property development in the 19th Century resulting in the traditional red brick terraced houses being built. The war caused a destruction of the area however some period homes and architecture remained and the rebuilding since then changed the environment and atmosphere of Islington which is now a popular area within London. Development within Islington continues to grow with new apartments blocks being built however the Georgian homes, terraced houses, flats and council estates remain within the tree-lined streets and beautiful squares.

The sophisticated range of shops which fill Islington are accompanied by the restaurants, bars and theatres which create a lively, fun and fashionable place to live. Angel high street and shopping centre also provide more to choose from. The positive culture, fantastic selection of properties, and large choice in shops and restaurants appeals to young families who are looking to be settles for many years.

Highbury and Islington tube station which is on the Victoria line and Angel station which is on the Northern line means you can travel to the City within 10 minutes or the West End within 20 minutes where even more entertainment can be found. Being so close to the city also gives residents the flexibility to walk in the town, avoiding the busy tubes and train stations.

To escape from the lively environment residents also have Highbury Fields very close by which makes Islington one of Central London’s greenest areas. This provides garden squares, parks and greenery for the locals to enjoy on a nice summers day.
